A free family day out at Parc Penallta
We had an amazing and FREE family day out at Parc Penallta recently. The country park located in between Ystrad Mynach and Gelligaer is the perfect place for a day out in nature with a picnic.
Search for the huge earth sculpture of a pony called Sultan, he's an impressive 200 metres long and about 15 foot high, you can climb on top an take a seat in it's year to enjoy the beautiful views of the park. After seeing the pony you can chose from one of three trails, Sultan, Skylark or Woodpecker trail or if you fancy a challenge or your'e cycling then there's a choice of three longer trails. We used the map in the leaflet to find a lake full of reed beds with a rickety bridge. It didn't take ages to find and we were fine talking a pram through the whole way, the reed beds were magical especially when it was followed by a willow tree tunnel.
On our walk we even found rabbit holes and spotted a baby rabbit, their were loads of Ravens too, definitely a good place to take the kids on a bird hunt on the way out of the park Cain even found a bright yellow pet Canary that had escaped from somewhere which was quite an unexpected find in a welsh country park!
Entrance is free but you do have to pay a small parking fee if you want to park in their car park. There's no shop or cafe so if your'e planning on spending the day there you'll need a picnic, there are picnic benches situated throughout the routes and lots of flat grass for picnics too.
We'll definitely be going back there throughout the summer, next time we're going to find the fishing lake and want to get to the view spot (maybe without a pram).
